Gábor Horn

Gábor Horn, born in Budapest on 25 November 1955, is a Hungarian economist, educator, former SZDSZ politician, education policy expert, and head of the Republikon Institute. He graduated from the Karl Marx University of Economics in 1980 with a degree in economics and teaching. He began his career as a secondary school teacher at the I. István Secondary School of Economics. He played an important role in establishing alternative education in Hungary. In 1988, he was one of the founders of the Politechnikum alternative secondary school, and was also a founder of the Democratic Trade Union of Teachers, PDSZ. He taught at Politechnikum until 2000 and remains the president of its foundation.

He was a key education policy figure, campaign manager and executive officer of SZDSZ. Between 1994 and 2010, he served as a Member of Parliament. From 1995 to 2000, he led the education program of the Soros Foundation. Between 2002 and 2008, as State Secretary for Coordination at the Prime Minister’s Office, he was responsible for coordinating negotiations within the governing coalition. Since 2008, he has been the head of the Republikon Foundation. He is the author of numerous professional articles and studies, and also works as a political analyst.
