Miklós Szócska is a university professor, institute director, and expert in healthcare transformation. He served as State Secretary for Health at the Ministry of National Resources and subsequently the Ministry of Human Resources between 2010 and 2014.
He graduated from Semmelweis University in 1989 with a degree in general medicine. Following his medical studies, he completed healthcare management training programs in the Netherlands, Japan, and London. He also pursued public administration studies in the United States and earned a Master’s degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1998.
Between 1991 and 2009, he organized and developed the Health Services Management Training Centre at Semmelweis University, which was officially established in 1995. He became its director in 2009 and, from 2010 until his appointment as State Secretary, served as the founding dean of the newly established Faculty of Public Services at the university.
From 1992 to 1993, he served as a member of the supervisory board of the Health Insurance Fund, elected by Parliament. Between 1993 and 1994, he acted as an advisor to the Ministry of Welfare, and from 1998 to 1999 he was an advisor to the National Health Insurance Fund Administration (OEP).
He currently serves as Director of the Health Services Management Training Centre at Semmelweis University, is a permanent expert member of the Artificial Intelligence Working Group of the Hungarian National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV), and participates in numerous international and domestic development and research programs.
For the 2024/25 academic year, he was awarded a Senior Fellowship at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government (M-RCBG) at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
His principal areas of expertise include change management, leadership, eHealth, healthcare communication, artificial intelligence and data science, the global regulation of these fields, and business models related to data utilization.
In September 2016, the Hungarian government nominated him for the position of Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations’ specialized agency for health.
